This is a review of YoYo Chinese, one of the most popular ways to learn Mandarin online.
Have you ever wanted to start learning Mandarin but with a focus on actually starting conversations? As someone who learned Chinese in college, many of my classes centered around writing & reading, with a heavy emphasis on preparing for tests instead of preparing for conversations. So, when I stumbled on YoYo’s course that promises to get you speaking Mandarin, I was very intrigued.
How did they do?
Yoyo Chinese is the best course available for Chinese Mandarin learners of any level to learn authentic conversational Chinese. The instructor does a great job taking difficult concepts and breaking them down into concepts English speakers can understand easily. From beginners to intermediate and upper intermediate, they have the curriculum you need to get started and get fluent enough to survive and thrive in China.
YoYo Chinese also offers a number of videos in their courses for free, which give you a perfect opportunity to see if they are a good fit for your learning style. And, with their money-back guarantee, there is nothing stopping you from learning conversational Mandarin.
There are a handful of YoYoChinese reviews out there already but, because YoYoChinese has evolved so much, even in the past year, many of those reviews are already out of date.
In this guide, I will tell evaluate YoYoChinese as a whole as well as share my experience of using it, including what I like and don’t like.
YoYoChinese Review Summary
YoYoChinese is the most comprehensive online Chinese-learning solution available on the market right now. From teaching Chinese characters to beginner’s conversational Chinese to upper-intermediate conversational Chinese, the only con I can think of is having to wait for them to release more content. Good news – they release tons of free content on their social media, too, so be sure to follow them there.

What is YoYo Chinese?
YoYo Chinese is an online Chinese-learning resource for learning conversational Chinese, which has now expanded to learning about writing/understanding Chinese characters and reading Chinese characters. It is led by host Yangyang and more recently have had other faces begin presenting material as well.
YoYoChinese allows you to learn Chinese at your own pace with their high-quality videos and wide-range of downloadable resources. Most important to me, YoYoChinese excels at teaching Chinese that is actually useful to using the language in real-world situations.
So, the main idea behind YoYoChinese is to let you learn practical Chinese, at your own pace, with easy-to-understand lessons and fantastic materials, all in one place, so you don’t have to bounce between many different learning materials.
Here are benefits you can expect with Yoyo Chinese:

Yoyo Chinese Course Content Style in Plain English
YoYoChinese focuses on video to deliver the core of the content and Yangyang does a great job presenting. She has a very clear Chinese accent and pronunciation, has excellent English speaking skills, and is extremely likable overall. She is one of the best presenters I have ever seen when it comes to educational materials.
The courses also include English, Chinese, and the pinyin to make it easy to understand what is being said on screen. A nice touch they include in some of the series of videos includes a review section that removes the characters/pinyin for a play-through and then reveals it, as if to test your listening skills.
A typical course starts with a video, that is around ~5-8 minutes on average, that completely guides you through the course content complete with real-life examples and a digital blackboard she uses to display useful information.
Learn Mandarin with Amazing Practice Materials
The videos are a great way to present the core materials, but it doesn’t stop there. Once you finish your lesson, on their newer courses, you are able to do an audio review, practice flashcards, and take a quiz.
These are AMAZING.
I’ll admit – I am typically the type of person, when it comes to online courses, that I will just binge-watch the videos, take some notes (sometimes) and move on. But, YoYoChinese has developed a fantastic system of reviewing audio, replaying the dialogue, reviewing the flashcards, and taking a quiz. This really helps make the learning much deeper and helps me retain the information much longer. If you decide to take YoYoChinese’s courses, I encourage you to go through the actual review. They even supply a study schedule to help guide you on what you should do on what days, which eliminates the guesswork even more.
Follow their Social Media for Free, Regular Fresh Content
Yoyo Chinese is showing no signs of slowing down and have been ramping up the number of new faces we are seeing on their social media channels. We are seeing more vlog-style videos with different Chinese speakers that show them narrating their everyday life and teaching specific topics around what is going on in the world during that time, often explaining what different festivals mean and what people do to celebrate. Most recently, they did a series on learning beginner Chinese and a series on baking with Chinese instruction as well. These have been posted for free on their Facebook and YouTube pages and are not only entertaining but very educational. They do a great job finding hosts that present material well!
The Verdict for Yoyo Chinese
For complete beginners to Chinese, people that want to learn conversational Chinese, or those that want to learn about Chinese characters, I have not found a solution better than YoYoChinese. Even though they do not have much material for students in the advanced level (just yet), the company is clearly committed to serving students and expanding their library. Since YoYoChinese even offers a number of their lessons for free, it’s a no-brainer to jump on their website and give them a try to see if they are a good fit for your learning needs.
Happy learning and I hope this review was helpful for you!
