YoYoChinese is one of the most popular Chinese courses on the market right now and chances are you have heard about it or seen one of Yangyang’s videos on YouTube or Facebook. What makes it so different and special from other courses is YoYoChinese’s ability to teach what’s widely regarded as the most difficult language to learn in plain English.
And, I think they have absolutely nailed. But, many people may still wonder if it’s the best option for their particular goals.
There are a handful of YoYoChinese reviews out there already but, because YoYoChinese has evolved so much, even in the past year, many of those reviews are already out of date.
In this guide, I will tell evaluate YoYoChinese as a whole as well as share my experience of using it, including what I like and don’t like.
YoYoChinese Review Summary
YoYoChinese is the most comprehensive online Chinese-learning solution available on the market right now. From teaching Chinese characters to beginner’s conversational Chinese to upper-intermediate conversational Chinese, the only con I can think of is having to wait for them to release more content. Good news – they release tons of free content on their social media, too, so be sure to follow them there.

Cons of YoYoChinese
Now, let’s take a deeper look into YoYoChinese and see what they have to offer and if it is the right solution for you. For your convenience, use the table of contents to navigate to different sections of the review.
What is YoYoChinese?
YoYoChinese is an online Chinese-learning resource for learning conversational Chinese, which has now expanded to learning about writing/understanding Chinese characters and reading Chinese characters. It is led by host Yangyang and more recently have had other faces begin presenting material as well.
YoYoChinese allows you to learn Chinese at your own pace with their high-quality videos and wide-range of downloadable resources. Most important to me, YoYoChinese excels at teaching Chinese that is actually useful to using the language in real-world situations.
So, the main idea behind YoYoChinese is to let you learn practical Chinese, at your own pace, with easy-to-understand lessons and fantastic materials, all in one place, so you don’t have to bounce between many different learning materials.
Here are benefits you can expect with YoYoChinese:
Courses Offered by YoYoChinese
As of 2020, YoYoChinese has a wide range of courses. They have a Beginner Conversational, Intermediate Conversation, Upper-Intermediate Chinese, Chinese Character Course, Chinese Character II Course, and a Chinese Reader Course. I personally have taken the conversational courses and have previewed the character courses and my following review is my opinion based on this.
1. Course Content Style
YoYoChinese focuses on video to deliver the core of the content and Yangyang does a great job presenting. She has a very clear Chinese accent and pronunciation, has excellent English speaking skills, and is extremely likable overall. She is one of the best presenters I have ever seen when it comes to educational materials.
The courses also include English, Chinese, and the pinyin to make it easy to understand what is being said on screen. A nice touch they include in some of the series of videos includes a review section that removes the characters/pinyin for a play-through and then reveals it, as if to test your listening skills.
A typical course starts with a video, that is around ~5-8 minutes on average, that completely guides you through the course content complete with real-life examples and a digital blackboard she uses to display useful information.
2. Amazing Practice Materials
The videos are a great way to present the core materials, but it doesn’t stop there. Once you finish your lesson, on their newer courses, you are able to do an audio review, practice flashcards, and take a quiz.
These are AMAZING.
I’ll admit – I am typically the type of person, when it comes to online courses, that I will just binge-watch the videos, take some notes (sometimes) and move on. But, YoYoChinese has developed a fantastic system of reviewing audio, replaying the dialogue, reviewing the flashcards, and taking a quiz. This really helps make the learning much deeper and helps me retain the information much longer. If you decide to take YoYoChinese’s courses, I encourage you to go through the actual review. They even supply a study schedule to help guide you on what you should do on what days, which eliminates the guesswork even more.
3. Regular Fresh Content
One of the cons I listed for YoYoChinese is that they do not have a true advanced course just yet. I admit, I was really trying to find some areas they could improve since they truly do so much right. In their defense, they regularly post new content and come out with new courses on a very regular basis. Most recently, they did a series on learning beginner Chinese and a series on baking with Chinese instruction as well. These have been posted for free on their Facebook and YouTube pages and are not only entertaining but very educational. They do a great job finding hosts that present material well!
For complete beginners to Chinese, people that want to learn conversational Chinese, or those that want to learn about Chinese characters, I have not found a solution better than YoYoChinese. Even though they do not have much material for students in the advanced level (just yet), the company is clearly committed to serving students and expanding their library. Since YoYoChinese even offers a number of their lessons for free, it’s a no-brainer to jump on their website and give them a try to see if they are a good fit for your learning needs.
Happy learning and I hope this review was helpful for you!
